Scaffolding is an important tool in construction and industry nowadays. Along with the increasing demand, the standards of safety, flexibility, and quality are also improved to meet the construction requirements. Because of that, different scaffolding standards were born. This article will compare the Scaffolding BS1139 Standard and EN39 - the two most popular scaffolding standards today.
The difference between Scaffolding BS1139 Standard and EN39
BS1139 and EN39 are the two most popular scaffolding steel tubes standards used in many fields. These are all common standards globally with strict requirements for scaffolding structures' quality, safety, and efficiency. Ringlock Scaffolding BS1139 Standard and EN39 are applied to the construction industry and are also widely used in the oil and gas industry with many different scaffolding systems. Sinopec Scaffolding Standard, Saudi Aramco Scaffolding Standard, KNPC, and KOC Scaffolding Standard are examples of the above two scaffolding standards. It is also accepted for onshore and offshore projects.
So what is the main difference between BS1139 and EN39 standards? What is the appropriate standard for us to choose?
BS1139 and EN39 are two British standards applicable to hot-dip galvanized steel pipe scaffolding. However, EN39 is the new standard, replacing the old standard BS1139 from the UK. So both will have similarities like:
- The tolerance requirements for BS1139 and EN39 are identical.
- Both standards require the manufacturer's name, date of manufacture, and the standard lettering on the scaffold tube.
- Requirements for mechanical properties, BS1139 and EN39 standards are almost the same in tensile strength, hardness, yield stress, and elongation.
One significant difference between EN39 and BS1139 is the chemical composition. Scaffolding BS1139 Standard has common chemical compositions according to required standards, including Carbon, Silicon, Phosphorus, Sulfur, Nitrogen. Meanwhile, the standard chemical composition EN39, besides the above five chemical compositions, includes aluminum. Chemical aluminum makes scaffolding steel pipes more flexible, suitable for use in cold weather conditions. In addition, because it is an improved standard, EN39 will cost more than BS1139.
The use of pipe scaffolding standards is one of the requirements to be followed in construction and many industries. The Ministry of Building calculates, develops, and issues these standards to ensure the construction process's safety and efficiency. However, after further analysis, it is clear that the difference between EN39 and the Scaffolding BS1139 Standard is negligible. The choice of scaffolding standard for the project will depend on the specific requirements.
