Although multiple nanoindentation measurements can be used to evaluate the hardness of thermal spray coatings, this method has not been reported in relation to the characterization of metallic thermal spray coatings deposited on polymer-based substrates. Nanoindentation can be performed to measure the hardness of thermally sprayed metal coatings less than 100 mm thick and to evaluate local mechanical properties (i.e., a combination of materials science and engineering methods is used to evaluate the mechanical, thermal, structural, and chemical properties of metal coatings thermally sprayed onto substrates on a polymer basis.
